The Grande Plage and the casino
In the heart of the town, the Grande Plage stretches its fine sand at the foot of the 1929 Art Deco casino and the Hôtel du Palais, a former imperial villa wished for by Eugénie de Montijo. People walk here at any hour, feet in the water, watching the surfers near the Port Vieux. A meeting on the casino terrace, as the sun sets fire to the ocean, offers a chic yet typically Biarrot setting, far from stiff codes.
Rocher de la Vierge and lighthouse
West of the Grande Plage, a footbridge attributed to Eiffel leads to the Rocher de la Vierge, a promontory crowned by a statue of the Virgin installed in 1865. The spot is one of the most photographed in the Basque Country, especially when waves burst into white plumes. A little further on, the Pointe Saint-Martin lighthouse rises 73 metres and offers a full view of the coast, from the Landes to Hendaye, after 248 shared steps.
Côte des Basques and market hall
To the south, the Côte des Basques has been the historic home of European surfing since 1957. People lie on the fine sand for a lesson or simply to watch the silhouettes glide. In town, the Biarritz market hall, lively every morning, invites you to a plate of mild peppers and Bayonne ham. On Lyad, Biarrot members share their favourite coves; it is up to you to find someone to launch the next ocean day with.
